I know I did. What strikes me as a foul is the assumption made in this movie that such decisions are necessarily the outcome of malicious intent by the professors. If there is a sound approach to religion, it is not the one many bring into such classes, and when a little thought jars that faith people bring into a philosophy class, it is hardy surprising to find some leaving the world of religion altogether. Some of us may think that's the best route to go; some would disagree, but one hardly needs to imagine philosophy professors evil to explain that process.northierthanthouhttp://northierthanthou.com/2012/12/07/murals-and-more-in-anchorage/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11789157.post-6407968097590225462014-08-14T09:43:49.720-05:002014-08-14T09:43:49.720-05:00Do you really believe that anybody with any real f...Do you really believe that anybody with any real faith has ever been convinced by a college professor to give it up? More likely they were just parroting what they had heard from parents and preachers all their life and finally felt the freedom to let their rational side out. And no professor could ever get away with making atheism a course prerequisite...get real! The entire premise of proving God's existence by rational argument is silly from the get-go. My advice to Christians: stick with faith and forget trying to rationalize it, it is a losing position. I hate to break it to you, but there is little evidence that Christ even existed as a historical person, there was no mass slaughter of Christian martyrs in the Roman arenas, nobody claimed Mary was a virgin until hundreds of years after her death, Christ was not born anywhere near Dec 25th, the oldest versions of the new testament don't contain Christ's resurrection (just his disappearance), in fact much of the Bible was just made up to convert heathens and barbarians to Christianity. That does not mean Christ did not exist, does not mean God does not exist, and does not make a lie of your faith if you have any. A house built on sand is still a house. However, if your faith is based on the literal truth of every word in the Bible...good luck.wafhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09060536723215431797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11789157.post-70955085941636887502014-05-05T10:56:32.283-05:002014-05-05T10:56:32.283-05:00Dostoevsky's pithy quote is precisely the kind...Dostoevsky's pithy quote is precisely the kind of argument that any philosophy professor or half-way competent philosophy grad student would be able to rebuke off-hand. Ethics as a discipline predates Jesus Christ by a few hundred years after all. I watched a trailer for it, and did not feel the need to see more of the same.
Here's what I think would make all such films better: appropriate using of swearing. Sounds oxymoronic, but what I mean is that it's not very true to life to expect the atheists and non-Christians in the movie to sound just as "goody two shoes" as the Christian characters sound. Not as if the non-Christian characters need to talk a blue streak (because that, too, would be stereotypical and cheap), but as you pointed out, the dialogue likely was a bit strained due to trying to keep it "safe for the whole family."
Or maybe even have the Christians say "damn" if it serves the plot. I guess I feel like Evangelical movies have such a focus on being "family friendly" that they can't really do a lot of justice to some really relevant and troubling topics (college kids losing faith being one of them).
My thoughts (as a Protestant Christian discerning my way to the Catholic Church). Did it have weaknesses, yes, but yes, I do think in today's culture, with all the atheism and secularism, etc., this movie being made is awesome and should be supported. I think that it doing so well is amazing, and I for one am glad as a Christian to support it. We actually went back and saw it a second time with my husband, and then a third time with my mom, a cradle Catholic, who fell away when she met my dad, but who has since returned to the Church, praise God!...okay, taking a breath now...phew! LOL, good review and do agree with your points on its weaknesses, but don't feel they were deal breakers at all...we all loved the movie...my two cents...just recently started following so keep on keeping on...God Bless! :-)
KarenKarenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11497015773073380059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11789157.post-34496052758270032552014-04-14T20:07:20.726-05:002014-04-14T20:07:20.726-05:00I went and saw this movie just this last Saturday....I went and saw this movie just this last Saturday. I tend to agree with most of your statements about it. I do think that the script could have stayed a bit more centralized. While the overall message was certainly good, much of the scenes that didn't revolve around the central characters seemed disjointed to me. Shane Harper and Kevin Sorbo saved the film, in my humble opinion. I left feeling like I had, overall, seen a film with an A+ message but C+ overall film quality.
Pax Christie, and have a wonderful and blessed Holy Week, Sister!
- ChrisChris V. - Totally Catholic Junkhttp://www.totallycatholicjunk.comnoreply@blogger.com
